What the flight times actually give you
Landing 11:25 means six people plus bags clear immigration and are moving by roughly 12:30. The return at 18:55 is the generous half: you need to be at BIA by 16:30, which leaves a genuine three-hour cushion on Monday rather than a race. That cushion is what makes a Monday-morning sightseeing stop possible at all.
The decision, in one line
Nobody in the group surfs. Arugam Bay is a sixteen-hour round trip built around a surf lesson and beach bars; strip the surfing out and two of its four days are windshield. Trincomalee costs five fewer hours of driving and puts something worth doing on both transfer days.

Two things to get right before anything else
- Sri Lanka ETA. The entry rules for Indian passport holders have changed repeatedly. Check the official eta.gov.lk position for September 2026 and apply in advance — do not assume visa-free on arrival.
- One van, one driver, four days. Book it as a single multi-day hire rather than point-to-point transfers: cheaper, and on these roads you want a driver who is still with you at 20:00. Agree the driver's meals and accommodation upfront — it is normal here and awkward to negotiate later.
Three options
Plan B2 is Plan B resequenced. Same destinations, same driving, but the night drive disappears, the temple climb moves to the cool of the morning, and Monday becomes one clean run.

Plan B2 — Trincomalee, resequenced recommended
BIA → Habarana → Trinco. Two bases, no night drive.

12:30 On the road from BIA. 16:15 Reach Habarana, straight into a jeep. 16:30–18:30 Afternoon safari — this is the prime window for the Gathering, not a rushed one. Sleep Habarana or Sigiriya.
Book a jeep, not a park. The herds move between Minneriya, Kaudulla and Hurulu Eco Park with the water levels, and lately often are not in Minneriya. Let the driver pick on the day. One jeep seats six.

07:00 Dambulla Cave Temple or Pidurangala — cool, empty, and the light is good. 09:30 Drive to Trinco, arrive around 11:30. Afternoon on Nilaveli or Uppuveli. Dinner in town.
Dambulla tickets are sold at the bottom, by the museum — buy before you climb the 350 steps or you get sent back down. Shoulders and knees covered, shoes off on hot stone.

08:00 Pigeon Island at opening — boat from Nilaveli, 15 minutes, one boat fits the six of you. Snorkelling is a separate ticket and they check ID. Afternoon Marble Beach, then Fort Frederick up to Koneswaram Kovil on Swami Rock for sunset.
Have a wet-weather fallback. If the sea is rough the boats do not run, and mid-September is the tail of the east-coast window.

09:30 Leave Trinco. One clean run to BIA, arriving around 15:00 for the 18:55 flight. Lunch on the road at Habarana or Kurunegala.
Plan B — Trincomalee, as originally drafted
One base at Uppuveli. Simpler on hotels, harder on Friday and Monday.

Pigeon Island at the 08:00 opening. Afternoon on Nilaveli. Dinner at Thambi or Ocean Oasis.

Optional 06:00 whale trip — but mid-September is the season winding down, so treat sightings as a bonus, not a plan. Otherwise Marble Beach, then Koneswaram at sunset.
- Mon 14
Leave 08:30, Dambulla ~11:00. A 350-step climb in midday September heat, then on to BIA for ~16:00.
This is the weak point: the climb lands at the hottest hour and the airport arrival has under an hour of slack once lunch is counted.
Plan A — Arugam Bay
BIA → Ratnapura → Wellawaya → Monaragala → Pottuvil. ~380 km each way.

Depart 12:30, lunch past Ratnapura, reach Arugam Bay around 20:30. Dinner on Main Street.

06:00 surf lesson. Out of the sun 11:00–15:00. 16:00 Pottuvil Lagoon canoe safari — elephants, eagles, no motor. Beach bars after.
- Sun 13
05:30 for Kumana at the 06:00 opening — the alternative to Yala, which closes for maintenance around this time of year. Back by midday. Elephant Rock at sunset.
Kumana's reputation rests on the April–July nesting season. In September you are spending a 6-hour round trip out of a 2-day window on a park that is atmospheric rather than crowded with animals.

Leave 06:30, reach BIA around 15:00. The 18:55 flight means this is no longer a race — but it is still eight and a half hours of your last day.
Ask the driver about returning via Wellawaya, Hambantota and the Southern Expressway. It is longer in kilometres but much of it is 100 km/h and far more predictable than the Ratnapura hill road.
Worth it only if the surf lesson and the bars are the thing you will remember. With six non-surfers, Saturday's content is a beginner lesson and an evening canoe.
Verify before booking
These were stated with more precision than they deserve in the original draft, and I have not checked them against live sources: the Koneswaram entry fee, whale sighting rates for mid-September, Yala's exact closure dates, and Pigeon Island's ticket prices. All are cheap to confirm and none is a plan-breaker — but confirm them rather than budgeting on them.

Six people, practically
- Van, not cars. Six plus luggage needs a 9-seat Toyota KDH or similar. Two cars costs more and splits the group across four days.
- Cash. Park fees and boat tickets are usually cash in rupees, and east-coast ATMs are sparse. Draw enough in Colombo or at the airport.
- Rooms. For six in Trinco or Habarana, a whole villa often beats three doubles on both price and convenience.
- One jeep, one boat. Six is exactly a jeep, and comfortably one Pigeon Island boat — so per-head costs work in your favour.
